I Rebuilt My Strength After Back Surgery
I had been into fitness most of my life, but things really changed when I turned 60. For more than 20 years, I
had suffered with severe lower back issues and was eventually diagnosed with spondylolisthesis. After a lower
lumbar fusion, I knew I had to do something different for myself. That’s when I started lifting weights
consistently.
In the beginning, my goal was just to build strength and feel better. What surprised me was how much
self-confidence I gained. Most people over 60 think they’re just getting older, but I felt stronger and more fit
with each passing day.
I Stepped on Stage at 69
I was lucky to have an awesome trainer, who kept encouraging me to step on stage at bodybuilding shows. At
first, I laughed it off—I was too afraid to put on that sparkly bikini. But after several years of gentle
encouragement, I finally gave it a try at age 69. The moment I stepped on stage, I fell in love with the entire
bodybuilding community.
Since that day, my journey has only grown. I’ve earned my GBO Pro Card at age 71, received sponsorship support, and
completed 13 shows. Competing has given me purpose, strength, and a community I truly cherish.
I’ve Learned That Consistency Wins
For the past six months, I’ve also been training in
Fanka leggings, and I can honestly say they’ve changed
the way I feel about my workouts. They support my body so well that I prefer them over all my old fitness wear.
When I put them on, I feel excited to move, to train, and to keep pushing myself.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: go slow, but never give up. Consistency is everything. Keep
showing up—day by day—lifting weights, eating your protein, staying hydrated, and keeping a positive attitude.
That’s how strength is built, no matter your age.
